Thailand seeks India's support for full Brics membership

THAILAND is seeking India’s support to become a full member of the Brics, it was reported today.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow pressed his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on the question during a visit to New Delhi.

“The foreign minister requested India’s support for Thailand’s interest in joining Brics during India’s Brics chairmanship in 2026,” the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

Thailand became a partner country in Brics from January 1 2025. Bangkok described the move at the time as a crucial first step on the path to joining as a full member in the future.

Brics was founded in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the original group of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia became full members on January 1 2024.

Indonesia joined as a full member in January 2025, the same month that Malaysia became a partner state alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. Nigeria and Vietnam also became partner states this year.
