On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing “opposes any action that violates the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter or undermines the sovereignty and security of other countries.”

Earlier, on Nov. 29, the United States claimed that the airspace above and around Venezuela should be considered closed “in its entirety.” The Venezuelan government issued a statement strongly opposing the U.S. remarks, arguing that such comments violate the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter and international law. Like many Latin American countries that oppose those U.S. statements, the Chinese diplomat affirmed that his country “opposes the interference of external forces in Venezuela’s internal affairs under any pretext.”

“The Chinese government is working with all parties to safeguard the status of Latin America and the Caribbean as a ‘zone of peace’ and to prevent further escalation of the situation,” Lin Jian added.

During a meeting in Washington, the U.S. president Donald Trump insisted that attacks against alleged drug-trafficking cartels inside Venezuelan territory would begin “very soon,” as part of Operation Southern Lance.

In response to this new threat, Venezuela warned on Tuesday that regional stability in the Caribbean is “under threat” due to “an unprecedented U.S. military deployment” that seeks to “destabilize” the South American country’s surroundings and undermine its sovereignty.

The Venezuelan government has denounced that the United States is carrying out its deployment as part of a plan to provoke a violent change in the South American nation. China has repeatedly expressed its condemnation in recent weeks of what it describes as U.S. “interference” in Venezuela’s internal affairs. https://www.telesurenglish.net/china-seeks-to-prevent-u-s-venezuela-escalation/
