Brazil Will Not Align with U.S. Policies of Confrontation Lula Vows

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that he rejects a “new Cold War” and assured that his country will not align itself with policies of global confrontation.

His statement comes amid the economic and political decisions that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has pushed against various countries, which includes the tightening of the blockade on Cuba, the siege on Iran, the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and the increase to 15% of global tariffs despite a Supreme Court ruling that declared it illegal.

“We do not want to interfere in any other country, we want everyone to be treated on equal terms,” Lula emphasized in a press conference at the conclusion of a three-day state visit to India.

  The Brazilian president said he hopes to hold a meeting with Trump in the first week of March in Washington, with an agenda focused on trade, investments, immigration, and university cooperation.

He further highlighted the moment Brazil is experiencing on the international stage and defended commercial diversification. “We have no commercial preference. We have commercial interests and we will pursue them with whoever wants to do so, as long as it is a win-win policy,” he assured. For the Brazilian president, the strengthening of the BRICS group is the tool to balance global geopolitics.

In that regard, he reiterated the need to reform the United Nations Organization, particularly its Security Council, to include more countries from Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
