China Calls for Halt to U.S.-Israeli Military Action Against Iran

Through social media posts on Saturday, China called for an immediate ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli military aggression against the Iranian nation.

“China is highly concerned over the military strikes against Iran launched by the U.S. and Israel. Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated.

“China calls for an immediate stop of the military actions, no further escalation of the tense situation, resumption of dialogue and negotiation, and efforts to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East,” it added.

Hours earlier, the Chinese Embassy in Iran had again urged its citizens to exercise extreme caution amid an “extremely grave and complex” security situation. There have been no reports of deaths or injuries among the Chinese community in Iran.

In a statement published on its website, the diplomatic mission recommended that Chinese residents in Iran “closely monitor the situation, remain calm, stay vigilant, strengthen security precautions, take immediate emergency evacuation measures, and avoid sensitive locations and crowded places.”

Previously, on Friday, the Chinese Embassy had urged its citizens to leave the country as soon as possible and to strengthen security measures, adding that Chinese missions in the Middle East would provide the necessary assistance to “relocate them via commercial flights or land routes.”

Chinese embassies in Lebanon, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates also issued security notices, calling on their citizens not to go outside unless strictly necessary, to stock up on food and medicine, and to “maintain a low profile.”

China’s mission in Israel issued a statement urging its citizens to “prepare for missile attacks, drones and other threats,” and to “familiarize themselves with the nearest bomb shelters and evacuation routes.”

On Saturday, Chinese experts cited by the Global Times said that the intentions of the United States and Israel “have always been regime change” in Iran, and alleged that recent negotiations were merely a “diplomatic cover” for an “underlying strategic intention” now evidenced by the military campaign.

Ding Long, a professor at Shanghai International Studies University, said the trajectory of the conflict will depend on “the scale and speed” of the Iranian response, which could be significant given its preparedness, adding that the aforementioned regime change “will be difficult.” China is Iran’s most powerful ally and also its main trading partner, accounting for about 30% of its foreign trade and 90% of its oil exports, followed by Russia and India.

In recent years, Beijing and Tehran have deepened their exchanges, including a strategic partnership agreement signed in 2021 that establishes a comprehensive framework for cooperation in economic, technological, energy and security fields.
