Lula won, but independent mobilization must be developed to sweep away the far right.

The result is a resounding defeat for Trump, Bolsonaro, Milei, and the entire regional far right.

However, the historic leader will govern with a Congress dominated by that same far right as a result of the first round. In his recent term (2022-2026), Lula made deals with a segment of that right wing and with a segment of economic power. Geraldo Alckmin's vice presidency embodied this strategy. But the massive mobilizations of recent weeks have shown that the power of the streets can change the political dynamic. Deepening this path independently and through class struggle is the way to completely sweep away Bolsonarism, big economic power, and imperialist interference.

On Sunday night, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory over far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro was confirmed . The incumbent president was re-elected, securing 51.78% of the vote compared to his rival's 48.22%. This was a historic comeback , given that he had lost the first round.

In a press conference, Bolsonaro himself announced that he would not recognize the election results . The far right accused the Brazilian Supreme Court of manipulation, which extended voting hours on Sunday. The result was a higher voter turnout, with many voting for the Broad Front candidate. According to polls, Lula received three out of every four new votes cast on Sunday.

Bolsonaro was defeated despite Trump's imperialist interference , the manipulation of Big Tech, and numerous other maneuvers. Ironically, Lula will govern with a Congress dominated by the far right , a result of the first round of elections, where the Liberal Party (PL) became the largest parliamentary force.

In his recent term , Lula made deals with a segment of the right wing and with a segment of the economic elite. This was evident, among many other things, in the selection of Geraldo Alckmin as his vice-presidential candidate. It was also reflected in the continuation of anti-worker measures implemented during his previous term, such as the exploitative labor reform imposed by the coup leader Temer in 2017. This continuity and its consequences—precarious employment and meager wages—negatively impacted broad sectors of the population. In fact, the outcome of the first round—where Bolsonaro won—cannot be separated from this.

In recent weeks, the massive mobilizations of the Lula supporters demonstrated the power of the streets . It was there that a new balance of power was forged, which found electoral expression this Sunday . But this mobilization process has a contradiction: it occurred in support of a candidate whose project is moderate in the face of the right wing.

The social force that ended the 6x1 work schedule (six days of work and only one day of rest) and defeated Bolsonaro must remain mobilized. It is urgent to deepen the path and the class struggle as the way to defeat the far right . This path is one of independent mobilization, not tied to a project of conciliation with capital. It implies building a social force that continues to grow from below, from workplaces, schools, and working-class neighborhoods. A self-organized force that can truly defeat Bolsonarism, the power of big capital, and that is part of a broad continental movement that expels imperialism from our region.

Diana Assunção, leader of the Revolutionary Workers' Movement (a sister organization of the PTS in Brazil), stated yesterday that “it was not moderation or conciliation with the right that defeated Flávio Bolsonaro, but the mobilization of millions. We need to keep this social force mobilized. It is necessary to transform it into an independent organization of the working class, with its own methods of class struggle, to confront the extreme right, imperialism, and defeat all counter-reforms, such as the pension and labor reforms that were maintained during Lula's last government. Now we must follow the example of France and Europe to effectively change the balance of power, which in the last period had subjected the working class and the Brazilian people to increasingly enslaving conditions.”

He also stated that "it is essential to continue fighting to end the 6x1 work schedule, to confront any attempted coup, and to combat Trump's imperialist plans. The strategic task is to build a revolutionary, socialist, and anti-capitalist alternative to the Broad Front of Lula and Alckmin, supported by the independent mobilization of workers and youth."

In Argentina, after the result was known, the leaders of the left referred to it; Nicolás del Caño and Myriam Bregman agreed on the need to develop the independent mobilization.
